Nevermore, Oregon is a quaint little town full of quaint little people surrounded on all sides by dense forest. The woods are so thick there is only one way to get in and out. The road leading in blends from asphalt to cobblestone, the road stained sanguine and maroon with berry juice and other liquid. Right before you hit the wall of oak and pine, a small sign alerts you of your entrance to the town, proclaiming its motto: Nature, Insight, Prudence. Friendly enough. Once you enter the town after what seems like days of driving, you are struck by how untouched from modern technology this place seems to be. The houses are all made of brick or stone and there are wrought-iron gas lamps on every corner. While the landscape looks like something out of a period film, the residents are definitely fantasy.
Most town residents keep their heads down, put their smiles on, never looking at anyone directly for too long, least of all in the eyes. They peek at you out of the corner of their eyes, as if they are trying to see you, but differently. Many people in town seem off: some too tall, others too short, long ears, tails, and wings even showing up. Fangs and wet animal noses shine at you from under the street lamps. Monsters hiding in plain sight. Others still look neither human nor alien, an awkward combination between the two. Their black eyes and rough gait, half-formed wings with sad, childish eyes.
There are people unsettled by these types of people, ones that wish them all gone from this world. Ones that hunt, trap, and kill for sport, food, protection. The hunted are displeased by the merciless slaughter and fight back, though they are often busy warring with themselves. The Fair Folk destroying the forest and tranquil atmosphere, creating a toxic warzone that borders the town on all sides, wolves and undead fighting in the streets over prey and territory, some fleeing into the hills, others into dark alleys and the library.
Where do you find yourself in all this and who’s side to you choose to find yourself on? Do not get too caught up in the fray or you may find you are losing yourself.
