General Fey Info Faeries are also known as the Good Neighbors, the Good Folk, the Old People, People of the Peace, Wee Folk, and Sidhe Faeries cannot lie, but they can omit the truth or tell the truth in a way that appears to by lying (but is true if you understand the original concept, much like an inside joke). Salt can be used to dispel some fey glamour. They also dislike and avoid the color red. Twigs of an oak, ash, and thorn tree bound together with red thread is a protective charm. Cold iron will burn the flesh of any fey. Turning your clothes inside out will dispel some minor fey magic, such as when fey curse the grass around their homes to turn people away. If you discover a fey's true name, they must do anything they are told to do using that name as long as you are specific. Faeries love warm milk, honey, and fresh cream.
The Courts The Seelie court is the light court, focused on good emotions but most of all sunshine. Solis is the queen. The Unseelie court is the dark court, focused on bad emotions but most of all darkness. Kane is the king. The roving fey classifies any fey that does not belong in either court. They are homeless, without organization or discipline. These fey are usually solitary, living on the edge of court territories and human civilization. Some band together in small groups for safety.
Changelings A faerie exchanged with a human child, left behind to take the child's place. It appears as the human child would as it grows up, physically fitting into its new home, but never quite assimilating. Their behavior is very much that of a faerie, very tricky and mischievous. They constantly appear to be untamed. Often, they will only eat very specific things, such as flower petals or raw soy beans. They are constantly barefoot. Their hair is matted and grows like crabgrass. Other things that set them apart from other children are their faerie characteristics, such as pointed ears or even a tail. They may speak entirely in sing song or riddles. Changelings rarely stay with their human families past a certain age, itching to get back to Faerie and will often take their human family with them once they do. Occasionally the faerie grows into its human skin and slowly blends into its human family seamlessly, often forgetting they were ever fey. Once discovering your loved one has been replaced by a faerie, there are several ways to get them back. Shoving a hot iron poker down the fey's throat or throwing them into the fire usually has the human version returned within a fortnight. Many people do assume incorrectly and end up murdering their human family member
Dragons Legendary creatures with reptilian features that have the ability to fly, breathe fire, and often speak. They are the embodiment of old magic and are thought to be extinct. Many assume they are extinct, but many more they are all simply hibernating or in hiding. They are wise beyond all else and bring magic to any area they live. Some believe they learned to become human and therefore perform an extremely advanced glamour to blend into modern society. Even people with The Sight cannot see through this unless the dragon wishes it to be so.
Dryads (treefolk) A dryad is a nature spirit. Typically, they are oak trees, especially in Greek myths, but they can be any local foliage, even something as small as a basil plant. A dryad is a magical tree that can take on a human form, one that usually looks like the plant itself. For example, a holly dryad would have beady red eyes and sharp features. They cannot go far from their plant, so most either stay nearby or carry the plant on their person so they can go out and about. Many small plant dryads have no trouble with this, but the larger ones usually get a shrinking spell to reduce their plant to a more manageable size. They age as their tree does, so a sapling would appear as a child or even an infant while an ancient tree would look so old they were ageless.
Dwarves Dwarves are mountain-dwelling fey that are skilled crafters. They are below average height, ranging anywhere from two to four feet. They look almost completely human, though their skin appears rock-like (anything from sandstone to obsidian to rose quartz). All dwarves of every gender have and grow beards. They are also the only kind of fey than can handle iron, hot or cold, with their bare hands. Most of their crafting is from iron itself as they are antisocial and often do not get along with the forest fey.
Elves Elves are typically rulers of the forest, skilled with all of nature and were some of the first to fine-tune their magic. They are a proud race and often appear as extremely beautiful and inhuman, even when glamoured. They are taller than the average human, some clocking in at eight feet tall. They are usually thin and spindly, therefore appearing fragile, but they are fierce and deadly. They have pointed ears and angular faces. Some have wings, others have tails, but all are vaguely humanoid. They are the gentry of the Good Folk and demand to be treated as such. They are the reason dwarves do not live in the forests anymore.
Goblins Goblins are typically grotesque little demons with toad-like bodies and devilish attitudes. They are born toothless and steal objects to place into their gums, such as broken glass or infant teeth. They are often used as cannon fodder in faerie wars and are disliked by all. They are skilled at tricks and glamour and make good henchmen. They rarely rise higher than that, but when they do, it goes to their head. They can even take on a more proper form, squashing toad down for a more exotic tree frog, smoothing out their lumps and replacing their teeth of glass with crystal and gems. They are almost always evil, usually due to rejection from society.
Kelpies They appear as black ponies, soaking wet and smelling of rotting flesh. Kelpies are carnivorous. They are old, with strong magic and good trickery to lure their prey into the water. They can even take on a human form if they must. If you get on a kelpie's back, thinking it is just a wild pony, you will ride to your death and will eventually be drowned. Many kelpies live in a single body of water they haunt. they are solitary, but sometimes live in groups.
Merfolk Merfolk appear human on their top half and fish on their bottom. They can breathe both water and air, though they must surface often as they mostly depend on that pure oxygen source. Their top "human" half also can take on the features of the fish they resemble, such as a lion fish merfolk having spiny hair or parrot fish merfolk having beaks for mouths. Merfolk are restricted to water, but most have adapted to using wheelchairs to get around. Most have webbed fingers. They are not that good at using glamour and must stay wet constantly so the ones that do venture on land carry around a spray bottle to spritz themselves.
Nixies Nixies are freshwater water spirits that take the forms of frogs and toads with a slightly humanoid figure. They are playful and fun-loving and enjoy song, especially the flute. They cause lots of drownings, mostly because they do not realize that humans cannot breathe through their skin. They must constantly stay wet, otherwise they will become dry husks on the side of the road. therefore, most do not venture far from their own ponds.
Nymphs Nymphs are nature's embodiment of pure beauty. They all are highly charismatic and do better in crowds. Most are very sensual beings and are often also very sexual as well but this is not always the case. Nymphs, because the embodiment of beauty is different for all species, can adapt their form as they grow for the area they live in. Most modern nymphs are synonymous with humans, but some still look like different fey races as well. there have even been reports of vampire synonymous nymphs with red eyes, pale skin, and long canines that aren't quite fangs. A nymphs cannot grow extra limbs and do not blend in perfectly with their species. they will often look just a little off, but not in an unpleasant way. their ears will not be pointed enough or their gnashing teeth not too sharp.
Ogres Ogres are old fey, tied to the time before forests and mountains and humans, when they could rule with just their size and might. Decedents from giants, they are often huge and tower over even the tallest of elves. They are a very proud species, in love with their heritage and the brutal days of old. They often hole up in opulent castles, drinking wine from glasses made of unicorn horn. They are extremely skilled at magic and can shape shift as opposed to glamour. They can transform from the tiniest flea to the mightiest of dragons. They exile themselves from society, seeing themselves as better than all others. Some ogres, of course, stick to a more primitive lifestyle of "grind your bones to make my bread". they all hate cats.
Phookas Also known as pĂșca, the phooka is a creature embedded deep in Irish folklore. They are considered both bringers of good and bad fortune and can both help or hinder travel. They are shape changers that can take the forms of black ponies, goats, rabbits and sometimes even dogs or humans. They are nature spirits that talk in riddles and live in the in-between space of Faerie and Ironside. They have soft black fur all over their bodies, long arms, and thin tails with tufts on the end. Their ears and eyes are big, though they have secondary eyes on their forehead to help them see minute details of life. If you eat blackberries after they go out of season, it is considered stealing from a phooka. They are masters of trickery and love to make a human into a fool.
Pixies Pixies are small, childlike fey that love playing jokes on anyone in the forest. They often appear as children or petite adults, with big wings and a greenish tint to their skin. They use their glamour for fun and games, though they often get in trouble for this.
Satyrs and Fauns Satyrs and fauns appear human from the waist up and half-goat or deer from the waist down. The often have horns or antlers, depending on their bottom half. They are horny bastards and love drinking and chasing after nymphs, though they often end up going on wild goose chases for them. Some of the more demure ones play music or sing. They are creatures of nature and are found in bands. Their music can enchant anyone who hears.
Trolls Trolls can take on a roughly human form, though the bigger they are, the harder it is to pull off. They will turn to stone in sunlight, but will turn back to flesh once the sun has gone down or they are killed. They often live under water, under bridges, or in caves to avoid the daytime sun. They are skilled alchemists and make potions as opposed to using magic.
Unicorns Horse-like creatures that retain their toes as opposed to hooves because they live in forests instead of on plains. They are always an eggshell white, but they can have speckles of color. They have a long, spiraling horn on their forehead that contains all their magic. Unicorns were once hunted for their horns as they contained healing properties. They are drawn to people with pure souls, as opposed to virgins, and they are drawn to children especially. They can take on a human form and are an embodiment of pure old magic. Presumed to be extinct.
